What happens in an unwind class?

unwind takes minimal effort: after you calm your nervous system, you lie down on our (un)Blocks for a body weight massage. Easy, right? Sound too simple?

We target multiple spots at once and hold each position for a few minutes to create fascia decompression. We never want pain or cringing. You're in charge of how much your body can handle, always.

What do I wear?

Wear comfy clothes, ideally without a lot of bulk or big zippers. Your favourite athleisure or workout wear will do nicely or come as you are from work. Love has taught in dress pants and a blouse.

As long as you can lie down comfortably and get back up again, you're good to go.

How is unwind different?

People say it's like foam rolling and massage on steroids but without the pain.

You're creating increased range of motion without stretching.

You're shifting your nervous system out of stress mode into rest and recovery.

All at the same time.

Is this woo-woo?

The research about fascia and what it responds well do informs unwind classes. Research shows fascia prefers and regenerates with slow pressure. unwind is beyond slow - we're not moving.

The nervous system calming practices come from a variety of modalities. Some are well researched, others are ancient and effective.

For example, the VOO breath calms the nervous system and is proven to produce nitric oxide, a powerful compound that helps athletic recovery (also found in beets).

This sounds like yoga...

With all respect to this ancient spiritual tradition, this ain't yoga.

unwind is body weight massage for workout recovery, injury prevention, and chronic pain management:

  • it creates mobility without stretching
  • is nervous system-friendly from start to finish, including the design and materials of the (un)Blocks
  • (un)Blocks are sophisticated tools, not props
  • redefines passive recovery from athletic exertion
  • provides cues to anchor the mind during release, inviting heart-brain coherence
  • is mental, physical and occasionally emotional (the body keeps the score) but not a spiritual practice.

What is fascia?

Fascia is considered by some to be our largest organ. It is a miraculous singe piece of connective tissue surrounding every cell, tendon, ligament, muscle fiber, the sheaths between the muscles, and organs.

Fascia glides with a lubricant, hyaluronic acid. It gets thick and gluey in response to a lack of movement, sleep, stress and hydration.

There are at least three distinct "types" of interconnected fascia. Most notably, like the liver, fascia has cells that can regenerate with deep, slow pressure - just like the liver.
